Why Art

Art can evoke emotions to individuals regardless of people’s identity, and there are many historical examples of this from Keith Haring's artwork for AIDS awareness, to Pablo Picasso for peace rather than war. It shows that art can be used as a form of engaging activism that draws a greater population into the injustices ongoing in the world. Continuing this cycle is important as more individuals will be educated upon these various issues, and build up to a larger community of people willing to make change happen.

Data

Statistics show that environmental injustices are being faced in Bay Area communities.

Our Mission

Our goal is to educate and spread awareness of the environmental injustices ongoing in the Bay Area, and we hope to obtain this goal by breaking it down into three parts:

We use public artworks such as murals, banners, etc. to connect with a larger audience about the environmental injustices we see in the Bay Area. This is because art can communicate to a variety of people regardless of their identity. If you have a space that is open to our artwork, please contact us.

Public Artwork

We are using social media posts such as reels and digital content posts to inform our online audience with the specific environmental issues we see in the Bay Area. This makes education and understanding of these issues easy to access and learn more about.

Social Media Presence

We love to connect with communities who are interested in taking the initiative of advocating for environmental justice issues! With community outreach, we will interview people who are directly affected by environmental injustices in their neighborhood, and organizations who are making change happen. If you are interested in connecting with us, please contact us.

Community Outreach

Data

Statistics show that environmental injustices are being faced in Bay Area communities.

2,520

is the estimated count of people who die per year in the Bay Area due to traffic-related air pollution (nitrogen dioxide). Exposure to nitrogen dioxide can result in the development and worsening of asthma, bronchitis, and increased risk of heart disease. It is estimated that, if lowering pollution levels in the Bay Area to the regional median, more than 1,000 lives could be saved. (Environmental Defence Fund)

5,210

is the estimated count of new childhood asthma cases per year in the Bay Area due to the traffic-related air pollution, via nitrogen dioxide. This is what causes the development and worsening of asthma. It is estimated that, if lowering pollution levels in the Bay Area to the regional median, more than 2,000 new childhood asthma cases could have been prevented. (Environmental Defence Fund)

50%

of childhood asthma cases in West/Downtown Oakland were caused by traffic-related air pollution, which is significant as over 70% of the population in that area are people of color. This is evidence of environmental racism, as only 20% of childhood asthma cases in Oakland Hills were caused by traffic-related air pollution, a region where 70% of the population are white. (Environmental Defence Fund)

97,138

is the estimated population of individuals in the Bayview-Hunters Point who are victims of environmental injustices happening in their community. These injustices are from the pollution of two highways in the area, toxic radiation from the improperly disposed waste in the Navy Shipyard, sea level rise, lead in tap drinking water, and more, raising the risks of asthma, cancer, relocation, and lead poisoning amongst the residents. (Greenaction)

How You Can Help

Contributing to Persistent Planet supports this youth-led initiative so much, as we can continue advocating for environmental justice for Bay Area communities!

Mural Spaces

Are you aware of spaces with blank walls that are interested in, both, making that wall more colorful, but also advocating for environmental issues? Please contact our email and let us know if you are aware of these spaces. This support can help us extend to further places and make these issues more well-known in the Bay Area.
